The system was developed by Ralph Baer, a German-American engineer who created the ping-pong style gameplay that the Odyssey offered. The Odyssey was manufactured by Magnavox and released in North America in September of 1972. However, once the game was fully designed and an advertisement was made, the company scrapped the entire project and Ski Festival along with it. Over time, MAME (originally stood for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) absorbed the sister-project MESS (Multi Emulator Super System), so MAME now documents a wide variety of (mostly vintage) computers, video game consoles and calculators, in addition to the arcade video games that were its initial focus. Magnavox also had Emery develop an exclusive game for an unreleased cheaper and less powerful version of the Odyssey: a time trial game called Ski Festival.
